The City of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, lies northwest of Wisconsin's capital city, Madison, along Interstate 94. This growing Dane County bedroom community, home to nearly 22,000 people, is popular to locals and Madison workers and academics for its wonderful park system, quality schools, its annual Corn Festival and the town's favorite pet, "Jimmy," the groundhog. Tradition says that the community of Sun Prairie got its name after a group of laborers headed to Madison from the northern Wisconsin Territories in 1837 to build a new capitol, who slogged through nine days of rain until they reached this point, where the sun came out.

Among Sun Prairie's jewels was the world-renowned painter, Georgia O'Keeffe. Born in Sun Prairie in 1887, O'Keeffe is typically associated with the American southwest and particularly New Mexico where she settled late in life. A major figure in American art since the 1920s, she is chiefly known for paintings in which she synthesizes abstraction and representation in paintings of flowers, rocks, shells, animal bones and landscapes. Her paintings present crisply contoured forms that are replete with subtle tonal transitions of varying colors, and she often transformed her subject matter into powerful abstract images. O'Keeffe died in 1986 in Santa Fe.

As one of the fastest growing communities in Wisconsin, Sun Prairie is near many major attractions, including the House on the Rock, Cave of the Mounds, University of Wisconsin sports and the Wisconsin Dells. Sun Prairie's park system consists of 32 parks covering 400 acres. Two nearby lakes, Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, provide many recreational opportunities, including boating, water skiing, fishing, wildlife programs, and camping.

Since the early days of European settlement, the region surrounding Sun Prairie (Dane County, Madison, etc.) has prospered from abundant fields bursting with miles of corn throughout the summer growing season. As a result, the Sun Prairie Sweet Corn Festival is synonymous with the climax of the corn harvest. Festivities abound as corn is served in big tubs, and people come from all over to grab several, salt and butter them, and enjoy corn on the cob. The festival is a charming reminder of life in rural Midwestern America.

Though Sun Prairie's roots may be rural, today it provides a haven for Madison-bound visitors and outbound leaders and workers in business, government and academia who have found Sun Prairie a pleasant, quiet, comfortable refuge from the pressured activity surrounding the political and highly-charged research atmosphere at the heart of the capitol.
