Cottage Grove, Wisconsin is both a township and a village in Dane County, located in the south-central region of the state. Cottage Grove is a rapidly growing suburb of Madison, Wisconsin and shares a school district with Monona. The village is located within the Town of Cottage Grove; its population was 4,059 at the 2000 census.

The settlement that became Cottage Grove was established when the Northwest Territory survey was completed in 1834. The first two parcels of land in the township were purchased on behalf of an absentee millionaire soldier who never used it as a residence. By 1842, ten households, 42 people, had settled in Cottage Grove Township. The townspeople adopted the name Cottage Grove when the community established its own government in 1849, the year following Wisconsin statehood. The name commemorates the fact that the first house in the township was built within a grove of oak trees.

Agriculture became the primary occupation in Cottage Grove for the next century, until the mid 1900's. Today, less than 1% of the residents in either the township or village of Cottage Grove list farming as their sole occupation.

In 2000, nearly 40% of Cottage Grove's residents held managerial or professional positions with almost one third in sales or administration.
