Columbus, Wisconsin a city in Columbia County in the southwestern portion of the state, is located about 28 miles northeast of Madison on the Crawfish River. Nearly all of the city is located within the Town of Columbus in Columbia County, though a small portion lies the Town of Elba in Dodge County. The population of Columbus was 4,479 at the 2000 census.

Columbus' first known settler, Elbert Dickason, built a home and sawmill on the west side of the Crawfish River in 1839. Many others of German, Welsh, Scandinavian and Irish descent followed. The family names of these early community leaders live on as major street names in the city. Columbus incorporated as a village in 1864, the same year that James T. Lewis, an early settler and Columbus' first attorney, became governor of the State of Wisconsin. The "old War Governor," as he was fondly known, was also a signer of the Wisconsin constitution. Within 10 years, Columbus had grown to become a city.

Columbus, Wisconsin presents an almost perfect portrait of the late 19th century with over 200 century-old commercial and residential buildings. Columbus' entire downtown commercial district is on the National Register of Historic Places. Each historic commercial building lends its special character and charm to the Columbus downtown. Columbus is a Wisconsin Main Street Community. As such, its unique downtown heritage is revered and restored to provide residents and visitors with a charming and memorable experience. Many frequently enjoy a walking tour of Columbus' American Heritage with numerous Victorian homes (painted ladies), a Carnegie Library, the "Jewel Box" Bank designed by Louis Sullivan, perhaps ending with a visit to the functioning 1892 City Hall. The hall has been restored, with much of the renovation work being done by volunteers, included restoring interior woodwork, renovating the exterior, and repairing the clock tower. When in the historic downtown, locals like to stop for a box of popcorn from George Hasey's original 1928 popcorn wagon.

The community strives to preserve and promote this particular heritage, many of which buildings are now included in the Columbus Downtown Historic District. Jaeger's Mill, built over 100 years ago, is an artist's and photographer's dream. It is located on the Crawfish River four miles east of town beside the dam, which powered its operation for many years.

The Pavilion of Fireman’s Park, built in 1917 to represent the alpine barns of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, still conjures up images of turn-of-the-century life. This social gathering spot was the site of community dances every Thursday night, except during Lent. In addition, it was used as a roller-skating rink during World War II. The Pavilion is both rustic and elegant in its simplicity with a wide wrap-around porch to offer important indoor/outdoor access in all types of weather. Schools, churches, banks and several breweries also flourished in early Columbus. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church proudly displays a steeple bell that was presented as a gift from Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany. Cast from six pieces of French canon captured during the Franco-Prussian War, it still tolls every Sunday morning. The original office of the Kurth Brewery still stands on Park Avenue. The other brewery buildings were destroyed by fire in 1916. (As you can imagine, Columbus boasts one of the highest number of antique shops per capita in southern Wisconsin.)

Today that charm, the appeal of an earlier and simpler time and the natural greenery and flowing hills that surround the community quietly invite people who yearn for a pleasant getaway to call home. Columbus, Wisconsin offers just such a lifestyle - yet is just a short drive from the thriving, youthful and active state capital in Madison. And access to other major urban centers, like Milwaukee, Chicago and the Twin Cities, is easy as it is one of the few remaining Amtrak train depots in western Wisconsin.
