COMMUNITY FACTS FOR YOU!
Watertown…"Home of the First Kindergarten"
The First Kindergarten
Margarethe Meyer Schurz, wife of Carl Schurz, a great U.S. statesman, began the first American Kindergarten in Watertown in 1856. She brought with her the idea of this form of education from Germany. The schoolhouse where she first held the Kindergarten class has been restored as a historical landmark within the city.
The Plank Road Barn
The Octagon House is one of the largest houses of the Pre-Civil War period to be built as a single family residence. Built in 1854 by John Richards from Massachusetts, this eight-sided, 57-room home is an architectural wonder that attracts visitors of all kinds. Features of the house include a central spiral staircase that rises up to the tower room and a cistern system that provided non-existent running water which was admired as a modern convenience during the time the house was built. The house was owned by members of the Richards family until 1938 when it was given to the Watertown Historical Society. Since then, it was renovated and opened to the public. For more information on the Octagon House, the First Kindergarten and the Plank Road Barn, contact the Watertown Historical Society at 919 Charles St., (920) 261-2796. The Octagon House is open to visitors from May - October, daily. Originally located along the Watertown-Milwaukee Plank Road, the Plank Road Barn was moved to the Historical Society grounds in the 1960’s. Today it provides a collection of pioneer tools and farm implements to visitors touring the area
